  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and sugar to the yeast mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a rope.
  7. Shape the rope into a pretzel form.
  8. In a pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil, then drop pretzels in for 30 seconds each.
  9. Remove pretzels, place them on a baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
